At the end of my recruitment agency start up workshop presentations, I always meet with customers to see if they would like to make an investment to get started or have any questions about what we have on offer.
As I was in the middle of a discussion with one of my customers, this lady received a phone call from a recruitment agency, and so she asked to be excused and disappeared for ten minutes.
Later she came back in to finish off our meeting.
She said to me: ‘You are never going to believe who that was?’
I said: ‘Go on’.
She continued: ‘That was a recruitment agency that I have never spoken to before. They had found my details on a CV database and want me to go to cover a temp booking assignment on Sunday, in a hospital in Hertfordshire, miles from where I live and they are only paying me £10.00 per hour’.
Now, I informed her that the hourly rate for her skill set for this booking was at least £19.00 per hour and the agency would be charging the hospital at the very minimum £43.00 per hour and seeing as it is on a Sunday they would double the charge rate.
So the agency would be charging at least £86.00 per hour and they were only paying her just £10.00 per hour!
I said to her: ‘Are you going to take the booking?’
She replied: ‘I have to, I have no choice, I need the money, but this is like ‘Divine Providence’ receiving that phone call out of the blue, ‘hidden forces’ telling me to sign up and get started on the programme with you right now. However, before I do, I will just need to get my daughters O.K.’
So she disappeared out the room again to phone her daughter. Half an hour or so later, after I had spoken to and signed up other customers to get started with their recruitment agency, she came back in.
Now, after that phone from the agency, I was 100% certain that she was going to sign up to get started.
I said to her: ‘Are you ready to go ahead then?’
She said: ‘No, my daughter doesn’t think it is a good idea to spend my money with you guys as me and she can do this together’.
I said: ‘So your daughter has a background in recruitment then?’
She said: ‘No, but my daughter said, we will just figure it out as we go along!’
I am thinking, whilst this lady was speaking to her daughter, I had signed up two customers, simply based on the information covered in the workshop.
With the phone call that this lady had received, Divine Providence’ or not, this lady could clearly see the true potential as to how much money she could be making for herself as opposed to making money for a recruitment agency that she hadn’t even spoken to before.
Plus, there was no way in a million years she and her daughter, without any recruitment experience what-so-ever, could just do this business on the hoof, as there are a number of legal requirements that must be adhered to when setting up a business, let alone a recruitment agency.
This lady in many ways is typical of the number of customers who come along to one of my workshop presentations who are extremely keen to get started, go away to speak to someone else who puts them of from starting.
Why on earth would you let someone else determine your future?
We only live once; life is not a dress rehearsal. So why live it according to the rules of others?
You don’t need permission from anyone, friends, spouse or even relatives for that matter.
Of course, it makes perfect sense to ask someone you trust for their advice, but at the end of the day, advisors advise, business owners decide. It should be your decision.
You should have the power to make the final decision. This is not something that you should defer to someone else to decide on your behalf.
You don’t need permission to start your own business. I regularly tell my customers that they shouldn’t want to spend forty years of their life, working over for forty weeks of the year, for forty plus hours a week working to make someone else rich!
Likewise, if you have come along to one of my workshop presentations and have been put off by someone telling you not to do it, then you should take this opportunity to re-evaluate your decision.
Seriously consider ignoring elitist ‘naysayers’ who say things like ‘what do you know about starting a business?’ Or ‘what YOU, start a recruitment agency?’
A word of caution here, sometimes it is out of pure jealously why a person will discourage you from getting started.
The idea of you starting a business and leaving them behind may not sit too well with them, so they try to put you off in some way or another, from improving your standard of living for you and your family.
Don’t let anybody put you inside a little box. And certainly don’t put yourself into a box.
They want to see you do good, but never better than them. Remember that!
Listen to yourself. Often we think we need permission from others before we take a risk. Not so.
From young, we ask our parents if it is okay that we pursue our dreams in life, or choose a career.
We don’t have confidence in ourselves. We ask the advice of others, because if we follow their advice and fail, we have someone to blame.
Do you know who you are? If you ask for permission or you ask the opinion of others, you are betraying yourself.
If you know that you really want to start a recruitment agency, and be your own boss, why do you need to ask for the opinion of others?
You don’t need to ask others whether you are capable of starting a business.
As you know, the unique service I offer is one-to-one hands on training and coaching to guide you every step of the way, so you don’t need to get permission from others.
Just do it.
And if you do need to get someone else’s permission, then always remember:
It is best to beg for forgiveness than to ask permission!
Most people are fast to stop you before you start, but hesitant to get in your way if you’re moving.
Don’t let other people’s default inertia stop you from getting started.
Sometimes, it is better not to ask permission from people who you know will want to try and discourage you, but just to take action.
And if the end result is good; they may find there is no criticism for you after all but praise for you having the courage of your conviction.
So, if you have come along to my previous workshops and have been put off from doing this by someone else, hopefully, what I have just covered in this blog post is still something that you would like to get started.
With this in mind, I would once again like to give you the opportunity of starting your very own recruitment agency. Call 0800 622 6877 to book a FREE Seat.
